U.S. ELITES 'SELL OUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE' TO CHINESE COMMUNISM, STEVE BANNON CLAIMS
President Donald Trump's former chief strategist Steve Bannon warned against the efforts of China's communist leaders to oppress the Chinese people, and what he claimed was the complicity of American elites in their actions.
"One hundred years from now, this is what they're going to remember us for, and I guarantee you that we're going to identify those members of the elite that sold us out and continue to sell out the American people and sell out the Chinese people," Bannon said on Tuesday at an event organized by the Committee on the Present Danger: China (CPDC).
"All the McKinsey guys, all the Booz Allen [Hamilton] guys, all of the law firms, all of the accounting firms, Goldman Sachs, my old firm, all of the commercial banks, all of them" have assisted the Chinese Communist Party, Bannon said. He then asked rhetorically if these powerful people were not aware of China's human rights abuses.
"The do not know about the enslavement of the Chinese people?" he asked. "Sure they do," he answered himself.
Bannon pointed to the oppression of China's ethnic Muslim minority populations, the Asian superpower's Christians and other religious minorities, calling this "the enslavement of the Chinese people."
Arguing that the government system in the West and in China are "incompatible," Bannon said: "One side is going to win and one side is going to lose."
"The Chinese people are among the most noble people who have ever walked the earth," Bannon continued. "They've been oppressed and abused for millenia," he argued. Referring to Chinese President Xi Jinping as "a new emperor," he said the country's communist party is now using a "radical" policy to oppress the Chinese people.
The CPDC is a Cold War–era advocacy organization that was founded to address perceived international threats, and later threats from communism. The committee was originally formed in the 1950s and repurposed in the 1970s to address fear about the Soviet Union. Bannon has helped to relaunch the group in recent weeks, with the goal of facilitating "public education and advocacy against the full array of conventional and nonconventional dangers" coming from China's ruling communist party.
Although Bannon was fired from the Trump administration and officially left in August 2017, his opposition to China is something that the president and top White House officials have repeatedly echoed despite Bannon's departure. The Tuesday CPDC event also featured prominent Republicans, such as Senator Ted Cruz and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
Last month, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said China was "in a league of its own" when it came to human rights abuses.
"For me, you haven't seen things like this since the 1930s," Michael Kozak, the head of the State Department's human rights and democracy bureau, said. He pointed to the widely reported detention of between 800,000 and possibly more than 2 million Chinese Uyghur Muslims, and other ethnic Muslim minorities, who have been sent to detention camps.
The U.S. intelligence community and top administration officials have repeatedly warned against the growing threat from China.
"Whether we like it or not the implications of China's rise will profoundly affect the choices NATO members will face, individually and collectively," Vice President Mike Pence said last week. "China's expanding influence will necessarily demand more of America's attention and resources, and as we meet that challenge, our European allies must do more to maintain the strength and deterrence of our trans-Atlantic alliance with their resources," he continued.
